New Research About CBDa and CBGa Draws National Attention
We asked renowned medical cannabis expert Dr. Dustin Sulak, D.O., to break down the Oregon State University research regarding acidic cannabinoids. All too often in media, headlines are sensationalized, and essential details are omitted. Many writers aren’t qualified to read, interpret, and decipher scientific research, and even fewer are qualified to speak intelligently about cannabis.
As with most dietary supplements or pharmaceuticals, we are often advised to “Ask our doctor.” So, when the headlines regarding CBGa and CBDa started to flood mainstream news channels last month, Cannabis Tech decided to do just that… and we reached out to the most well-qualified person we know in the realm of acidic cannabinoids.
Dr. Dustin Sulak, D.O., is one of the leading voices in medical cannabis. As a practicing physician at Integr8 Health in Maine and cannabis education leader at Healer.com, Dr. Sulak’s credentials and experience run deep. In addition to maintaining his practice, he is also a licensed producer of cannabis and hemp-derived products, a passionate teacher of clinicians, patients, and industry professionals, and he also sits on the board of directors of The Society of Cannabis Clinicians.
Can Cannabinoids Prevent and/or Treat Symptoms of COVID?
We asked Dr. Sulak this question, and he replied, quite confidently, "Based on the research, they can!" Then, frame by frame, he discusses the recent headlines and breaks down the research out of Oregon State University. While the research is valid, Dr. Sulak highlights that due to continued restrictions on cannabis research, certain cannabinoids, namely THCa, had to be excluded from the study despite their obvious potential to serve the same function as CBGa and CBDa.
During our interview, Dr. Sulak explains, in detail, how the research shows that these cannabinoids can bind with the spike proteins that enable the SARS-COV-2 virus to infect human cells and virtually render them useless. Additionally, Dr. Sulak also emphasizes that not all products on the legal market today offer these acidic cannabinoid formulations, as often the extraction process decarboxylates the cannabinoid. Explaining his low-temperature, low-pressure extraction methods to preserve acidic cannabinoids, he clarifies how commercial products can vary.
Combatting Misinformation with Education
As the headlines touting the potential of particular cannabinoids as a COVID preventative are on the rise, so is a plethora of misinformation. In the age of information where everyone has a platform, Dr. Sulak believes the best way to compete with misinformation is with the truth.
Fortunately, as time passes, more and more research is beginning to support the theories based on decades of anecdotal evidence. Dr. Sulak believes it’s been a perfect storm of advocates and patients speaking out, the realization of the economic benefits of cannabis, and the rise in cannabis research that is slowly pushing cannabis potential to new heights.
